HOW TO RUN (you know you were wondering)

Monday, February 28, 2011

Ok, I have to say that this couldn't have come at a better time for me.
My sister in law and I decided to do this couch to 5k program (I started today- she started Saturday).
We decided that at the end of April or beginning of May we would run a 5k together.  When I was looking for 5ks to run I happened upon a barefoot 5k. What the wha?  Then today my friend, Lori, posted this "How to Run Better" information from her cousin, Karina, and I just ate it up.  Below is the running info copied and pasted or you can go read it on Lori's blog here.
And can I just say THANK YOU ladies!?! ok. I'll wait for permission before I will say it. ;)
Oh, and BTW I'm crushing on Adele right now. And Matthew likes escalators.  He geeked out about it at the bookstore today. And Meg was the cutest hula girl at her school's Hawaiian day today. And Aaron's auditioning for Into The Woods this weekend.  Just thought I'd throw in a little personal/family info in here. lawl.
Now for the running instruction...

This is what Karina wrote:

"We took a $5 class at Runner's Corner in Orem and I really wish we had taken it a long time ago! The class was taught by a guy who does ultra marathons (100 miles!) and another guy who has been running forever and won lots of races, but I don't remember which ones! First they had us run around a track and took a video of us and then they had us take off our shoes and they took a video of us running around the track again (I'll get back to the video later--it blew my mind!). Then we gathered back together and they told/showed us the 4 most important things to remember when running to avoid injury, be more efficient, and reduce fatigue.

1) Balanced Forward Posture--stand tall and straight, looking ahead. Slightly lean from the ankles without bending at the waist while having your chest forward with shoulders back and relaxed. The way they had us practice this was stand straight and then lean forward from the ankles and when you feel like you need to step forward because you are going to lose your balance, start running! They called it "controlled falling".

2) Compact Arm Swing--Short, relaxed arm movement, elbows should not extend in front of the waist. Pump elbows back and relax/recover forward. Arms should not cross your body (it makes your body sway and causes hip pain among other things). I pretty much wasn't doing any of this and it was slowing me down/tiring me out!

3) Proper Foot Strike Under a Bent Knee--Landing on just your heel is bad (can cause shin splints and all sorts of other injuries and it slows you down because it pushes your energy behind you instead of forward) and landing on just the ball of your foot is bad, too. You should land on both the ball and the heel at about the same time (mid foot strike). The feet should strike the ground under a bent knee (to avoid knee injuries). Although the foot will contact the ground slightly in front of the body, it should feel like it is directly underneath. In other words, you shouldn't be taking gigantic strides in front of your body.

4) 180 Cadence--They said this is the most important of all because if you can do this, everything else falls into place. This is what I focused on when I ran a little over 7 miles and it was, dare I say, easy! Your goal is to run a minimum of 180 steps per minute. That means 30 steps per leg in 20 seconds. So they had us count how many times our right leg hit the ground in 20 seconds. Alan and I were both at 25, which is too low (30 is what you are shooting for). This was a revelation to us! It was as simple as stepping quicker. I was all focused on stride length before but when I focused on getting 30 right foot strikes in 20 seconds (I got a cheap watch with a timer from Target), my steps were smaller and lighter and it took way less energy because I wasn't spending too much time in the air or on the ground. You can also run to a metronome set to 180 or a song that has 180 beats per minutes. START BY FOCUSING ON 180 CADENCE. (note from Steph: there's an ap for that- download a metronome onto your iphone :)

Ok, so back to the video. I can't tell enough people about this part! We went back to the store and all watched everyone run in suuuuper slow motion. On the video of us with shoes, almost EVERYONE (there were about 25 people in the class) was landing on their heels when they ran. I kinda already knew heel striking was bad so I was making a conscious effort not to so I was shocked when I saw in the video that I was landing on my heel with a straight leg. I could actually see how that was causing all my soreness. I mean, just think about jumping up and landing on your heel with your leg straight. Not great. Also, I looked like I was LEAPING through the air. After all the things they taught us, I could self-diagnose what I was doing wrong before they even said anything. I had wayyy too much air time and I could see that my cadence was so slow. Also, I had the dreaded criss-crossy arms (very common in women; the ginormous forward and backwards arms are more common in men). It was making my body twist and that would explain my hip pain when I first started running. My posture was actually ok but a lot of people had "broken" posture (bent at the waist) which is bad for your back, etc. The awesome thing is that I would have never known these things about myself if I hadn't watched it. So I highly recommend taking a video of yourself running and watching it in slow motion, as painful as it is!

THEN, we watched the video of us barefoot/in socks. WHOA. Every person had near-perfect running form. What the...?! Everyone was landing midfoot with soft knees and we were leaning from the ankles and everything. And what they said made perfect sense. Without shoes our bodies naturally try to protect themselves, which is a good thing in running. I had seen a few barefoot runners and had heard about it and thought they were weird hippies but now I get it. Most running shoes are way higher and heavier in the back and they encourage heel striking. Some companies now make "zero drop shoes" that are super light and don't have a clunky heel and you also might have seen the Vibram five-finger creepy ninja-turtle-looking feet glove things.

(Steph: remember this pic of the toe-shoes I wanted?!) I'm a convert and I think I will transition into the barefoot/minimalist running world after the Ragnar. A survey was done with different groups of runners and by far the runners with the least injuries were barefoot/minimalist runners and ultra marathoners (because how else could you run 100 miles with inefficient technique?).

The good thing is, you don't HAVE to run barefoot or in minimalist shoes. I applied the 4 techniques with my normal running shoes and it worked so well it was liberating! I honestly felt like I could run longer when my 100 minutes were up because my energy was being conserved the whole time. My strides were much smaller than before because I am still not a fast runner, but that doesn't matter. What matters is that I am not taking gigantic and slow heel strides and I know how to be efficient now. I am so excited about all this that I had to restrain myself from saving random runners on the track from injury by telling them that they were doing something wrong.

Before this class I just thought I was still a beginner so I was just going to hurt everywhere in my legs every day. My legs would slow me down before my lungs would I was so sore I could barely sit down to stretch! After a few days off and running this new and improved way, I'm barely sore!
Anyways, running barefoot for 30 seconds before a run can help a lot. Also, they said you should run 1/3 of your mileage on natural or uneven surfaces to strengthen your stabilizing muscles. They warned us not to start running miles barefoot because your feet need to get stronger and stronger. You should just start with a minute and then keep adding to it on each run. Whew! That's a lot of info and it would make more sense if you could just see the videos. I found a link to this site on the Runners Corner site:
CLICK HERE and they talk about almost the exact same 4 points (go to videos and there are some good ones that can show good form vs. bad form and what a good cadence looks like). This turned into a really long note, but I wanted to share what I learned with the world so everyone who is a runner or wants to be a runner won't get hurt. Thanks, Runner's Corner!

Upload Extravaganza~ PART 1

Saturday, February 26, 2011

Ha ha!!  I love the word Extravaganza.
It's so hideously hokey that I have to use it.
Anywhozzle, I thought I had lost my mini SD card from my phone but it turns out that it was just in my USB mini card reader, so I stuck that bad boy in and uploaded alllllll my pictures from the last couple months.  Here is the last bit of our lives in pictures:

We planted our garden

 Before:

aaaand I have a big forehead :)  It's shy- I thought you'd like to see it exposed.  A very rare occasion.

I made cream cheese from yogurt with an online recipe- it was WAY too sour for me. I let the whey drip out of it (above in the towel).  The yellowy stuff below is the whey, which I preserved to make homemade ricotta.

Boot Camp in 29 degree weather.  I brought hot chocolate.  taking off my gloves to drink it was a bad decision. My fingers froze. Brittneym don't kill me for posting this picture. I look WAY worse than you!

We like to go hiking.  I am so bummed I couldn't get a picture of the cardinal we saw.  It was magnificent.  birdalicious.
no, I didn't eat it.

Field journal.  My kids are pretty legit.

Cactus. pokey.

Ha ha- out of order pictures.  No time to organize...
here's our sprouting garden:
Radishes

 Dill

 Meg's flowers

Can you see it???  Summer Squash down at the very bottom of the hill... magnify... oh well.

More hiking. lawl.  I'm so lazy to not organize this. sorry.

Matt loves to do dishes.  We've had our dishwasher fixed so many times and the dishes still end up dirtier when they come out then when we put them in so we just hand wash everything.  We'll be getting a new washer soon.  This kid's a stud.

MORE TO COME :)

PSY 101 Experiment. dot dot dot

Friday, February 4, 2011

For my final project in PSY101 I have to perform some research.  I have to do an experiment or evaluate people in their natural habitat or something similar. Basically I have to have a hypothesis and test it out.
Here is what I'm going to do and I need your help....

Hypothesis:
A homeless musician can make more money on the street if he is more skilled than if he is not.

What do you think?!?!  I think it would be pretty cool to go to downtown Phoenix dressed as a homeless person and test my theory.  I'll sing well for a while and then at another time I wont.  lets see how it goes....   want to join me?  If you are a skilled musician come downtown with me on March 26th and we'll test out my theory and do a little charity work. fun. Take a street corner and sing/play to your heart's content! We'll just give whatever we earn to someone who is really homeless after we count it up. ha ha ha I'm really excited to do it.  I'll let you know how things progress... Comment or email me if you want to participate.
Ok, gotsta go to bed. 4:50 comes early. (especially when it's so cold outside)

If you'd like to do this but you're not in Phoenix you still can get people in your area to do it.  Just tally up amounts and let me know what you find so I can include it in my research paper!

PSS- I think I sound a little insensitive in this post- sorry!  I am just very excited.  This is a really great way to do charity in a deflated economy.  Give of your time and talents to help others (even poor starving students like me can do it!)

AIRPLANE

Thursday, January 27, 2011

Sorry I slacked on telling you all about the US Airways shoot. It all started on a cold dark night when I sent our (Aaron, Stephanie, Megan) headshots and resumes to a commercial company in response to an audition notice for a US Airways commercial...... lawl
We were chosen and on Wednesday we went to the US Airways building just off Rio Salado in Tempe for a costume fitting (they told me what they wanted and I had to pick out similar things in our wardrobes and bring them).  Then they played doll with us. "go try this and this on.......hmm no, lets try this and maybe that." back and forth trying on different combinations with our and their supplemented accessories and such.  Then on Friday night we went to the US Airways hangar at Sky Harbor where they dressed us in the clothes they'd picked out and some ladies from MAC with pink hair and upper lip beautymark piercings did our makeup.   There were about 5 or 6 other actors.
Here's the airplane!  The screen reflects light into the plane where we were filming.  The stairs to get up to that monster were kind of wobbly and really steep (they are not the ones seen in the first pic- they were on the opposite side.  Megan was scared so Aaron carried her part of the way. My high heels kept sticking in the little holes. ha ha

They took out seats so the camera crew could set up all their stuff.  Sorry I didn't get a better picture of the set up inside!!  If you know photography equipment, you should geek out when I tell you the whole thing was shot using the RED EPIC camera which takes like 240 still shots per second, so while they are using a "video" camera, it's taking stills and they don't have to switch between still and video shots.
It turns out that it's not for an actual commercial (although they could still use it for a commercial if they wanted) but for all of US Airways promotional materials in airports/ website and training materials and videos.  We were told not to be surprised if we see these pictures in a magazine in the future.  No one had to speak and we just followed directions like, "Now look at the flight attendant, now look at each other, now look at Megan's book like you're reading something intersting, now look back at the flight attendant, now walk by and smile at the flight attendant... etc etc etc.."

We got to eat a lot of airplane snacks... What's your pleasure?  It was a snacky free for all.  And I don't know what was up with the orange bracelet.. sheee-oot!  They ended up changing my outfit a little in the middle of the shoot and made me wear someone's glasses cause I looked too young...  That always seems to be a problem.

Oy.  I look bad in this picture. however, I think Aaron looks awesome and it's been a while since I've posted a pic to show how thin he's gotten :)  What a handsome guy (they made him shave his full beard into a moutee).
We only had to stay until about 1:15am (because they wanted to get Megan in and out before a case of the tireds became a problem {halleluia}). Everyone else had to stay... It reminds me of the Brian Regan joke about still getting a whole sno cone even if he only played half of the baseball game. "So I'd rather play half game."
It was pretty cool to write up the invoice when I got home.  I told Meg that she has to put half into savings and pay tithing and the rest she could use however she wanted.  She's buying a parakeet and cage. She has wanted one forever and couldn't save up her money long enough to buy one.  fun stuff.
What is your opinion on that?  Aaron says that we are entitled to hers but I think that she should get all of it...tell me what you think.

Anywho, it was fun and I'd do it again in a second. woot.  BTW- if my posts get sparse I'm truly sorry- I'm in school, work, running carpool and boot camp, doing homework and bleh bleh bleh... boring, but busy.  Just shoot me an email if you miss me and I'll post some Steph candy.
PS- coming soon... singing at the Barrett Jackson Auction last week with William Joseph and a 300 person choir! FUN!  It was pretty cool..... shoot.. I don't want to give too much away....

Don't cry over spilled milk

Saturday, January 22, 2011

there was just a little bit of milk left in the carton so I poured in some chocolate syrup and shook it up.... without the freaking cap on.
milk shower!  Megan thought it was hilarious... and honestly, so did I.  It has been a few hours and I just noticed some milk on my neck that I missed with the towel. dried crusted milk. lol.  I guess that's what happens when you don't get enough milk.  err I meant sleep.  oy. I think I need a nap.

1000 words

@ US Airways commercial/photo shoot...
I'm beat. I'll tell y'all about it tomorrow....

There is no rhyme for Hummus.

Friday, January 14, 2011

I was going to title this post something cute- an equivalent of such titles as "Playing hookie for a cookie," or "Oh gosh do I love squash," But there is no rhyme for Hummus.  The closest word you can find is one just ending in "us" like nucleus or hypothalamus.  What fun is that?  "I go ape for middle-eastern basil garlic Hummus. as does my almond-sized hypothalamus."  errr..... something....

Despite it's seclusion from all words of rhyming influence, Hummus is actually quite the culinary companion for a lot of food words such as pita chips, homemade bread, tortilla chips, veggies, crackers and chocolate cake.  Just checking to see if you actually were reading or just skipping through to get to the pictures and actual recipe. That's right- I got your number, you blog skimmers (and to that you could simply say "It takes one to know one" and I wouldn't argue).  Since I know how much you love to read and read and read mundane facts, I thought I'd just post a link to the interesting origin of Hummus and get right on to the recipe. Woot!  This is SO SO SO much better than any I've tried from the store.  I also like that there is no added oil- a lot of recipes add evoo, but there is enough natural oil present in the tahini (which can be found at sprouts in the nut spread isle. Yes, they have a nut spread isle).

Hummmmmus
4 cloves garlic
2 cups or 1 can Garbanzo beans- also known as Chickpeas (reserve liquid)
1+1/2 tsp kosher salt
1/3 cup tahini (sesame paste- or sub peanut butter)
6 Tbs Lemon Juice (2 lemons)
8 dashes hot sauce (I used Franks Red Hot)
6 Tbs of the reserved Garbanzo bean liquid

Puree together in a food processor.

yup, that's it.  So nummy.

You can add whatever you want to flavor it differently.  here are some ideas:
roasted red pepper
basil
italian parsley
toasted pinenuts
cilantro
sun-dried tomato
olive
lemon
chocolate cake

Yeah, I must be craving chocolate cake today. lawl.
Enjoy, y'all.

Poor Jud is dead.

Thursday, January 13, 2011

Such a sad day- Our car is officially dead.  It now needs a new engine.  This old car is not worthy of a new engine, therefore we are going car shopping tomorrow and the next day.  I've got to find a car before school starts next week! bleh!  If you're looking to sell a car, please let me know.  I am hoping to get something with more than 5 seats, but I'll take what I can get.  Email me if you know of anything!

Happy news- I just finished my first crochet project ever while I waited for Matthew in karate tonight.. I've started a few crochet projects over the years but I've never completed any until today woo hoo! Here's a link to it if you want the pattern. I made mine a little bigger and dopey, but it's still cute. And here's the kicker- it was fast and easy. If it's complicated and takes forever, forget it! Anywho, sorry about the poor quality pic- my phone stopped taking pictures and I'm using Aaron's phone. booo. Me needs a camera.

Ok, I promise I'll post the hummus recipe tomorrow! Pinky PROMISE!! I was going to serve it at dinner tomorrow when we had friends over but now we're cancelling the dinner to go car shopping :( , so I guess I'm going to have to just eat all the rest of it and post the recipe instead. One thing I've learned as I've maowed on this hummus is that when you're dieting you CAN have too much of a good thing.  Oh boy can you.  I'm really surprised that I've maintained my weight.... maybe it's because I'm working out again.... speaking of which...

I started up the exercise group again if anyone is interested in working out at 5:30 in the morning for free let me know~ I'm lead a workout group that does boot camp style workouts at ASU East campus.  Lemme know, peeps!

Signing off!

Oh- remind me to tell you about the celebrity function Aaron and I will be singing at on Monday with William Joseph and the commercial shoot for US airways we'll be doing in a week! Boo-yah!
